Writing Tips

Day 7

Write a letter to yourself telling you what you need to improve in the coming 6 months.

Dear Me,

You have a lot of work coming up, a lot of improvements to be made. Currently, you’re averaging about 5 to 10 pages of re-write a day. While that is commendable, it means taking well over a month to do just one re-write. Step it up! Once you’re done this re-write, you need to finish book 3. You’ve done great so far. You nearly completely it in just over a month. Seriously, fantastic work! Now, to compete it. There’s just over 15k left and then it’s on to re-writing book 2. Wheew, seems like a lot of work, but we both you can do it. Provided you keep working at it. Stop getting distracted, stay off FB, don’t surf the net and for crying out loud, stop staring into space! Space has nothing for you, there is nothing up there to write your stories. Pay attention to your words.

And speaking of words, write down your most commonly used ones and stop using them. Find alternatives. Repetitiveness is boring and makes even me want to stop reading. You’ve formed certain habits and those habits are showing through. Quit it.

Characters. Figure out the voice for your character. Create a dialogue with them, argue with them, learn who they are. And write it down! Then when you get stuck, you can just reference it and refresh yourself.

Descriptions. Geez, is it really that hard to describe something? Work on this. You see the pictures so vividly in your head, now make it come alive to the reader. I know you can do this. There is some amazing descriptions you’ve added in the books already.

Well, that’s it for now. So pay attention to what I’ve written and work on this stuff.

Love always and forever,

Me.
