Excerpt Monday, My Books

Excerpt Monday

It’s my first post of the year and I’m excited about some new changes I’ve implemented in my writing life. I’m focusing on productivity and how to manage my time. I’ll admit, I’m a procrastinator. Deadlines are a fantastic way to motivate me, but it means I also waste a lot of time when I could be doing something else. This year, I’m writing three books at a time, which means I’ll have the rough draft of three completed by the spring time. Yay!

To celebrate this, each Monday, I’ll post a short excerpt from one of the three books. This week, it’ll be from Poisoned Message, the last book in the Enforcers and Coterie series. Please keep in mind, this is unedited. 🙂

Night slowly settled on the beach as the sun drifted below the horizon. Pink clouds drifted across the sky, and the stars played peek-a-boo. Water lapped against the sand while a light breeze brushed against Nicor’s skin and ruffled his hair. He sighed, wishing for one brief moment that he could remain here forever, cocooned away from the daily horror of his life. Maybe, once the Overlord was dead, he’d moved near the ocean.

“Nicor, why did you bring another demon with you?” Mara’s light, sweet voice startled him from his reverie and he whirled to face her.

“Because I have no idea why you called this meeting,” he said, sticking as close to the facts as possible. “Perhaps you could enlighten me?”

Mara’s blonde curls caught the dying light, turning them into a bright fire that danced around her head and her blue eyes seemed like bottomless pits, filled with an ancient and destructive knowledge. So much pain and yet, she remained innocent and caring. How much of Mara was a lie? Did anyone know the truth about her?

“Reveal yourself, demon. There is no need to hide from me.” Mara stared at Keliesh, like she knew exactly where he stood. See invisible? Well, of course. He should’ve suspected she’d have a multitude of spells cast.

Keliesh dropped his invis and bowed to the Mage Coterie leader, the movement respectful, not mocking. “It’s an honour to meet you face to face at last.”

“Yes, I’m sure it is. And you’re part of the abduction team?” A well-groomed eyebrow disappeared beneath her bangs while she waited for their reply.

Nicor shook his head and mentally cursed. How had she figured it out? They would never subdue her now.

The Love of a Good Fae

I have some exciting news. The Love of a Good Fae is available for preorder, release date Jan 24th, and will be the first book of 2017 for me! 🙂 It’s available at all major retailers and once I have it combined with Chained in Desire, the paperback will be available, probably sometime late January as well. I like to keep the corresponding novellas with their novels, since it makes life easier, I find. Although a part of me would love to see this cover in paperback. Isn’t it gorgeous!

the-love-of-a-good-fae-fb-size

A novella in the Enforcers and Coterie series. Each one is a standalone book delving deeper into a world where magic co-exists peacefully with the ordinary, for the most part…

Lilith Tremaine spends most of her time in an insane asylum, recovering from a vicious attack, or so the world believes. Craving revenge, she’d made a binding oath to the Light Fae queen, Tatiana. A mistake she can’t undo.

Caymus, an elite warrior for Queen Tatiana, has always followed his queen’s wishes. His latest assignment, however, strains his loyalty. Infiltrate a warlord demon’s stronghold and retrieve a dangerous object. The prize Tatiana dangles convinces him to complete the hazardous mission – Lilith’s freedom.

Feeling responsible for Lilith’s attack and subsequent oath to the queen, Caymus would do anything to free the woman he loves from a lifetime of servitude. Even if it means his own death.

So share this post, share the coupons, and enjoy a paranormal romance/urban fantasy blend.

In case you were wondering why you should start reading this series, here’s what others are saying about it.

Throwing Away the Good ~ This novella was a great read! The story, plotting, world-building and characterization were very creative and original (which gets harder and harder to find once you’ve have read several dozen paranormal romance type books).

Magic Resistant ~ It’s not your typical paranormal novel and brings new ideas alive, making it different and more exciting than standard novels. The two main characters, Jackson and Julia are both intriguing and very different! Julia wasn’t one to break the rules until Jackson came along and taught her that sometimes you have to break the rules to get the answers you need.

Sylvia’s Torment ~ He’s a tough, unrelenting, shrewd leader who hunts down his missing lifemate with the same fierce tenacity that won him his position as the head of Toronto’s packs. But as you read on you discover Derek is a study in contrasts. Despite his icy facade and all that power, the tenderness and adoration he shows for his woman as she recovers from a horrific ordeal is a refreshing character trait for an uber-alpha male in the PNR genre.

Dawn’s Keeper ~ The playful interaction between Elijah and Dawn combined with their take-no-sh!t attitudes was refreshing, and the back story was fascinating. It is always wonderful to see favorite characters from the past as well. *coughMarcuscough* The action throughout the novel was well timed, and with all the plot twists, I found myself never getting bored. I definitely recommend this series- It’s a sure thing for a great read.

New page added – Ask a Character

I stumbled upon this idea from another author and thought, wow, that’s pretty neat, meet the characters and interrogate… I mean, ask them questions. I’ve created a form with several main characters listed. Click on the drop down, choose one, and then type whatever your heart desires. Once I receive a few questions, I’ll make a post with the answers.  Ask whatever you like, although keep in mind, I won’t give out any spoilers. Just beware, Markus and Keeper are known for being smartasses. *laughs*

Launch Party, My Books

Updates – I have a few…

As you may recall, a little while back I kinda fell in love with a cover artist named Julie. Visit her website. Her work has me in awe. I wish I could show you all the covers she’s made me, but some of them won’t be out for a year or so. Yeah, I went a little crazy. *laughs*

After she created the cover for Chained in Desire, the one I’m working on now, along with two other covers later on in the series, I realized my other covers just didn’t line up. I liked the covers, but I didn’t love them. Julie had also added in a theme, the silver name and subtitle and the flames at the bottom. It excited me. It motivated me. Until I looked at my older covers, then I was a wee bit depressed.

I had a fantastic idea. Change the older covers! Convince Julie she needed to make me new ones, which the sweetheart of a woman did. You can see them all over there —> and, um, down a bit. It’s on the sidebar, I swear!

If you want a better look at them along with the blurbs, go to the Enforcers and Coterie page. Aren’t they gorgeous!

Now some of you may have noticed I’d been updating the covers along the side. If you did, good eye. I know I haven’t really mentioned it previously because I was revising the books as well. I sent Magic Resistant to my editor, Elizabeth, who then smacked my fingers for several mistakes and helped me shape it into a more cohesive story. I also rewrote the fight scenes. I’ll add a snippet at the end.

Both Throwing Away the Good and Magic Resistant have been updated on Amazon and Smashwords, so if you’ve already bought them, then grab the new version. You’ll know it’s the correct one when you see “Revised June 2015” in the copyright information. If it doesn’t update for you, let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

I wanted all this done in time for my latest release, Dawn’s Keeper. And I did it. Whew! Go me. And to help celebrate my third book, myself and a fellow author, Jen Winters, are having a launch party on June 16th. There will be games, giveaways, prizes, and more. It starts at 10 am and runs until 11 pm Daylights Central Time. Join us or drop in throughout the day. There are 13 authors lined up including little old me.

And at the Gala, I’ll be revealing the cover for Chained in Desire, Victor’s book. *sigh* He’s one sexy man. Don’t miss it! Join us at the Grand Gala Paranormal Release Day <– Click the link, join the event. Do it. Do it! You know you wanna. 😉

Oh yes, I almost forgot the snippet for one of the new fight scenes.

Her mage sense alerted her to trouble, and she ducked. Her shielding flared, brilliant white lights indicating the strength of the hit. The third troll, having learned from Jackson’s agility, had swung low.

Shit, these bastards aren’t completely dumb.

Spinning around to asses her new threat, she immediately regretted it. Another swing, this time lined up with her face, smashed against her shielding. She sent a mental thank  you to Markus for the defensive spells. As the more powerful of the two, he’d insisted on using his magic on the both of them.

She flipped backwards, putting space between her and the club-happy troll. Crouched, she swiftly weighed her options.

Can’t do the fireball, no gun with cold iron bullets, don’t have time to drop resistance and cast since he’s winding up again for another hit. Earring it is.

Touching her star rose quartz stud, she whispered, “Tremere.

The ground beneath the troll’s feet shook. He stumbled, and the tremors increased.

Mentally accessing her grimoire, she settled on an illusion.

Markus would be so proud, she thought wryly. He kept harping on the benefits of illusions, except she wasn’t nearly as powerful as him. While his illusions were flawless, hers shimmered around the edges.

What makes me happy

Ice cream. Yep, ice cream makes me deliriously happy. I used to by a carton a week when I was kid. *sigh* I would pay $2 for one and on my walk home I would start eating it. Yep, I went to the store with a spoon simply so I wouldn’t have to wait. I’m pretty sure that says something about my personality…

Want to know what else makes me happy? Finally finishing Dawn’s Keeper. It was a struggle, a huge struggle, to get this book done. I’d lost sight of the main character’s personality and kept adding bits from another character I was also writing. After realizing what I was doing wrong, and slapping myself upside the head for it, I re-wrote huge chunks of the book. Now when I read it, I nod my head and say, “Yep, that’s Dawn.”

I’ve already sent out some ARCs (advanced reader copy) to a few people, some of whom threatened to cut me if I made them wait any longer… and the feedback has been overwhelmingly good.

It’s such a fantastic read with so many twists, turns and revelations that leaves you breathless. I want to say that is the best work of Veronica Del Rosa (so far) – but I think she has more in store for us. ~ Kat from Goodreads

Her world-building is absolutely amazing. Each and every character has such a unique personality and background, though a couple of them are still somewhat of a mystery (Markus and Viktor!!) ~ Erika from Goodreads

One sent me a message that was simply WTF!!!! I laughed so hard when I received it.

Dawn’s Keeper is now available for preorder on Amazon and will also be on Smashwords for June 15th. Preorder here.

PS I’m in the process of editing Magic Resistant, the first book, and it should be ready for June 15th. I do recommend waiting until the edit is done, since I’ve learned a lot in the past year. Throwing Away the Good and Sylvia’s Torment are done with their edits. Oooh, and lookie at the new covers! Once Magic Resistant is ready, its cover will also be updated.

Cover Reveal Time!

Dawn’s Keeper is now with the editor where she will rip it apart, make me cry from her snarky comments – love them! – and help me make it better. To go with this milestone, I also have a shiny new cover and a blurb. Yay!

dawn's keepertwo FBsize

Against his better judgment, Elijah agreed to help Dawn with a mysterious problem. Too bad the ancient vampire wanted nothing to do with him. Prickly and evasive, she rebuffed him until she had no other choice.

Dawn didn’t want or need the help of mere human. She’d survived countless battles since the start of civilization. Now she’s being stalked and spied on in her home. Could she rely on the resourceful yet enigmatic Elijah or was he one of them?

Secrets brought them together. Secrets may destroy the trust growing between them. She was an ancient warrior, a protector of vampires. And he…is not human.
