Excerpt Monday, My Books

Excerpt Monday

It’s my first post of the year and I’m excited about some new changes I’ve implemented in my writing life. I’m focusing on productivity and how to manage my time. I’ll admit, I’m a procrastinator. Deadlines are a fantastic way to motivate me, but it means I also waste a lot of time when I could be doing something else. This year, I’m writing three books at a time, which means I’ll have the rough draft of three completed by the spring time. Yay!

To celebrate this, each Monday, I’ll post a short excerpt from one of the three books. This week, it’ll be from Poisoned Message, the last book in the Enforcers and Coterie series. Please keep in mind, this is unedited. 🙂

Night slowly settled on the beach as the sun drifted below the horizon. Pink clouds drifted across the sky, and the stars played peek-a-boo. Water lapped against the sand while a light breeze brushed against Nicor’s skin and ruffled his hair. He sighed, wishing for one brief moment that he could remain here forever, cocooned away from the daily horror of his life. Maybe, once the Overlord was dead, he’d moved near the ocean.

“Nicor, why did you bring another demon with you?” Mara’s light, sweet voice startled him from his reverie and he whirled to face her.

“Because I have no idea why you called this meeting,” he said, sticking as close to the facts as possible. “Perhaps you could enlighten me?”

Mara’s blonde curls caught the dying light, turning them into a bright fire that danced around her head and her blue eyes seemed like bottomless pits, filled with an ancient and destructive knowledge. So much pain and yet, she remained innocent and caring. How much of Mara was a lie? Did anyone know the truth about her?

“Reveal yourself, demon. There is no need to hide from me.” Mara stared at Keliesh, like she knew exactly where he stood. See invisible? Well, of course. He should’ve suspected she’d have a multitude of spells cast.

Keliesh dropped his invis and bowed to the Mage Coterie leader, the movement respectful, not mocking. “It’s an honour to meet you face to face at last.”

“Yes, I’m sure it is. And you’re part of the abduction team?” A well-groomed eyebrow disappeared beneath her bangs while she waited for their reply.

Nicor shook his head and mentally cursed. How had she figured it out? They would never subdue her now.

My Books, Preorder

The Love of a Good Fae

I have some exciting news. The Love of a Good Fae is available for preorder, release date Jan 24th, and will be the first book of 2017 for me! 🙂 It’s available at all major retailers and once I have it combined with Chained in Desire, the paperback will be available, probably sometime late January as well. I like to keep the corresponding novellas with their novels, since it makes life easier, I find. Although a part of me would love to see this cover in paperback. Isn’t it gorgeous!

A novella in the Enforcers and Coterie series. Each one is a standalone book delving deeper into a world where magic co-exists peacefully with the ordinary, for the most part…

Lilith Tremaine spends most of her time in an insane asylum, recovering from a vicious attack, or so the world believes. Craving revenge, she’d made a binding oath to the Light Fae queen, Tatiana. A mistake she can’t undo.

Caymus, an elite warrior for Queen Tatiana, has always followed his queen’s wishes. His latest assignment, however, strains his loyalty. Infiltrate a warlord demon’s stronghold and retrieve a dangerous object. The prize Tatiana dangles convinces him to complete the hazardous mission – Lilith’s freedom.

Feeling responsible for Lilith’s attack and subsequent oath to the queen, Caymus would do anything to free the woman he loves from a lifetime of servitude. Even if it means his own death.

What makes me happy

Ice cream. Yep, ice cream makes me deliriously happy. I used to by a carton a week when I was kid. *sigh* I would pay $2 for one and on my walk home I would start eating it. Yep, I went to the store with a spoon simply so I wouldn’t have to wait. I’m pretty sure that says something about my personality…

Want to know what else makes me happy? Finally finishing Dawn’s Keeper. It was a struggle, a huge struggle, to get this book done. I’d lost sight of the main character’s personality and kept adding bits from another character I was also writing. After realizing what I was doing wrong, and slapping myself upside the head for it, I re-wrote huge chunks of the book. Now when I read it, I nod my head and say, “Yep, that’s Dawn.”

I’ve already sent out some ARCs (advanced reader copy) to a few people, some of whom threatened to cut me if I made them wait any longer… and the feedback has been overwhelmingly good.

It’s such a fantastic read with so many twists, turns and revelations that leaves you breathless. I want to say that is the best work of Veronica Del Rosa (so far) – but I think she has more in store for us. ~ Kat from Goodreads

Her world-building is absolutely amazing. Each and every character has such a unique personality and background, though a couple of them are still somewhat of a mystery (Markus and Viktor!!) ~ Erika from Goodreads

One sent me a message that was simply WTF!!!! I laughed so hard when I received it.

Dawn’s Keeper is now available for preorder on Amazon and will also be on Smashwords for June 15th. Preorder here.

PS I’m in the process of editing Magic Resistant, the first book, and it should be ready for June 15th. I do recommend waiting until the edit is done, since I’ve learned a lot in the past year. Throwing Away the Good and Sylvia’s Torment are done with their edits. Oooh, and lookie at the new covers! Once Magic Resistant is ready, its cover will also be updated.

Cover reveal… again!

Oh my, it seems like just a few weeks ago that I did the cover reveal for Dawn’s Keeper, due out in June. Wait a moment, it was. 😉 If you like, you can view that cover here. It’s the 3rd book in the Enforcers and Coterie series.

But that’s not what we’re all here for. No, we want to see the cover for the novella, the one that explains the origins of the vampires in the E&C universe. Set in Ancient Egypt, it takes us through the journey of two different people falling in love, and what happens when one ignores the laws of his people.

Assassinated Love Full Size

Assassinated Love will be out in August. Check back for preorder information.

And my lovely author friend, Jen Winters, hosted a cover reveal on her blog along with updates for events she’ll be part of this coming few months. Go, read, and enjoy!

99 cent sale for this weekend

From March 27th to March 29th, I’m having a sale on Sylvia’s Torment, the second book for Enforcers and Coterie. Head to Amazon and check it out. If you love werewolves, Fae and magic, you’ll enjoy this. A wonderful blend of paranormal romance and urban fantasy. A review is always appreciated since word of mouth is so important for indie authors. 🙂

Second of the Enforcers and Coterie series, each one is a standalone book delving deeper into the world where magic co-exists peacefully with the ordinary, for the most part…

But not broken.

Derek wants Sylvia back–now. His Beta. His second-in-command. His lifemate. As a Top Alpha, few obstacles stand in his way. Even with near infinite resources at his fingertips, he feels useless. If he doesn’t find her soon, he’ll turn feral and destroy everyone in his way.

He waited to claim her…
Has time run out?

Three months since her abduction, Sylvia keeps a mental tally as day passes into night. Torture and endless rounds of experiments push her to the brink. Escape, rescue, it’s hopeless, impossible to obtain. Silver in the walls burn her, drugs keep her complacent.

If she escaped, would she be sane? If she came home a damaged werewolf, would her pack accept her…
Or kill her?

Bonus novella included: Unexpected Werewolf

Lori hadn’t expected her world to change. Go to work, avoid her asshole boss Ed and spend time with friends. Then he came into her life. With a few simple words , he altered everything. Could she accept the new and the unknown?

Hmm, what’s new with me?

Well, let’s see. No vacation coming up. No major life changing decisions made. It’s still really freaken cold outside. Oh, I know, my second book for Enforcers and Coterie has been published! *happy dance* I am so excited for this one. Oooh, and as a bonus (I feel like an infomercial telling you the extra goodies you get if you order now!), I’ve included a novella, Unexpected Werewolf, at the end of Sylvia’s Torment. A book and half for the price of one! 😉 Don’t worry though, no cliffhangers and each one can be read as a standalone.

Thanks to my absolutely amazing editor, Elizabeth, this book is immensely better than the first. Don’t believe me? Well how about these snippets from 4 and 5 star reviews?

“Fast-paced, never a dull moment in the entire length of this novel, and an excellent set of characters have been introduced. Out of all the characters, Sylvia is no doubt my favorite. Despite everything she went through, she’s still kickass. Derek, on the other hand, is delish. Ha!” ~ Katrina

“This was a GREAT read. LOVED Derek, hot sexy bad-ass Alpha with a heart—Hell YEAH! Sylvia was also wonderful, the trama she goes through and her journey back to herself is incredibly compelling. I adored these two together and I love the world Del Rosa has created. The Enforcers, the Coterie, the myriad of races and all their quirks, it’s awesome.” ~ Heather B.

“The sex…was phenomenal. It was straight to the point, no fancy words or imagery to get in the way of an amazing literary experience *cough*. Derek sounds like a wild beast in the bedroom, but I LOVED the twist that Veronica (the author) threw in there! I don’t want to give too much away because it was a very exciting experience.” ~ Heather S.

“The plot was exciting and moved at a brisk pace. There were numerous thrilling and violent showdowns between villains and the good guys, along with many sweet (and VERY HOT) scenes between Sylvia and Derek. ” ~ Erika

Now doesn’t that sound tempting, like an exciting book to snuggle into? It’s available at both Amazon and Smashwords.

Misbehaving Characters

The past two days I’ve been in a writing slump. The words refused to come to me, the characters thumbed their noses at me and I had nothing but crap to show for all my hard work. Okay, fine, I wasn’t working as hard as I should have. I’d blame the head cold, except that’s a cop-out.

The truth is, I didn’t listen to my characters. I forgot who they were and how they’re react to certain situations. As this is the 4th book of the series and the three main characters have appeared throughout, they have established who they are. Three strong-willed, opinionated and passionate characters.  And I was doing them a disservice.

Some of the scenes were spot on. Their personality shone through, as long as they weren’t interacting with each other. And other scenes were mired down with flatness. Hell, I didn’t want to read it again! Not good when the author is also bored. When the major revel occurred, it was hum-ho. The characters just kinda sat around going “Now what?” Yep, it was pretty damn terrible.

Which begs the question of how the hell am I fixing this?

I did what any good writer did. I thought about it. *laughs* Yep, just sat around thinking. It doesn’t sound like hard work, but damn it’s difficult. After a day and half of mulling it over, processing it, looking through notes and just plain old thinking, I figured it out. I need to start at the beginning and rewrite everything. There are some passages I will keep although it won’t be presented the same way. The interactions with the characters will change.

I listened to the characters and now hopefully they’ll stop screwing around and make a beautiful story with me. 😉

Day 11 on NaNoWriMo

Overall I’m doing quite well with my writing goals. Each day I’m hitting 2,500 although today I kinda sucked. I only wrote 1,100 words. *sigh* Which means I’m 1,400 words behind.

The words I wrote today, well, they were terrible. It was to be a major revel and fell flat. However I’m not doing any editing during this month. If I do, I’ll never reach 50k in a month. I figure lay the groundwork first and then make it shine once it’s all written.

I’ll share a snippet that I’m proud of though. I like the emotions this scene conveys.

He played a dangerous game. One he had no hope of winning.

“Show yourself, Revenant,” she murmured.

“And if I don’t want to?” he asked as he trailed a finger down her bare arm.

Her hair reached for him, needing what he promised. Treacherous hair couldn’t tell the different between the two men. It responded to her desire and didn’t care if Revenant was forbidden.

“Markus is my lover, not you.”

“But I could be.” Again his lips brushed her cheek, dangerously close to her lips. “All you have to do is say yes.”

“I can’t. I love him.”

“You love me as well.”

“That doesn’t matter. He has my heart and my loyalty. I will not betray him”

“Damn you. And damn him.” His breath fanned across the back of her head and his hands ran down her arms. “He doesn’t deserve your loyalty. This is his fault. He knew what would happen. Knew I’d come to love you as deeply as he does.”

“Revenant…” she sighed, hating the pain he felt. There was nothing she could do though.

“Don’t. I don’t want to hear excuses for him.”
